Contra-Lit was established as a specialist non profit organisation (NPO) which was
formed in 1994 with a mission to assist community leaders, NPO`s and
government officials to develop skills so that they can effectively initiate and
manage developmental and job creation projects to the benefit of the
communities they serve.
In the late 90`s it secured funding from European Union, IFES in Washington DC,
The NLC (National Literacy Co-operation) National NGO in education & The
Mvula Trust National NGO specializing in Water, Sanitation and Health and
Hygiene.
During that time our work has empowered communities to play an active role in determining their own destiny and in uplifting their quality of life. Communities have initiated and developed sustainable projects, thereby playing an active role in the development of SA.
Contra-lit has had the opportunity to work with communities in all provinces in SA and have also had the privilege of working with communities in Swaziland. The organisation is fortunate to have a team of highly trained and dedicate facilitators who are able to adapt material to every language group and cultural environment.
Our organisation adopts an outcomes-based approach to training. Its programmes are practical in nature and our approach is adapted to meet the needs of each group that is trained.
Contra-Lit believes that trained structures must be capacitated to take ownership for the sustainability of their own projects and as such community delegates are actively encouraged to apply their newly acquired skills to their projects. They are coached and supported by our community development team while they implement their skills. This integrated approach has resulted in sustainable skills within community projects and their ability to manage their own affairs without the support of external providers.
Some of the major Community Based interventions Contra-Lit has been involved in over the last few years are:
Mrs BUSI NGOBENI
Mr JACK NGOBENI
